The early reinforcing layer used cotton cords and then switched to strong rayon ropes. Due to the disadvantage of large elongation, since the 1970s, polyester wire ropes with high strength, small elongation, heat resistance and bending resistance have been widely used in various countries around the world. The modified polyester rope with fixed and low shrinkage has become the mainstream of plastic mesh belt materials. For V-belts for high-load transmission, impact-resistant transmission belts and agricultural machinery, some have begun to use aramid fibers. The reinforcing layer of the plastic mesh belt has long been used for the purpose of reducing the strength of the steel wire and the polyester, and at the same time, it is suitable for high-speed rotary transmission due to its large specific gravity, and has now been basically eliminated. The use of polysilicon cords is rarely used for products requiring high dimensional accuracy due to the problem of expansion and contraction. At present, it is considered that the skeleton material of glass fiber, which can make the elongation at the time of meshing transmission small, has a moderate linear expansion coefficient, and is disadvantageous to bending fatigue and the like, and is widely used.

In the future, aramid fibers with higher strength and better bending resistance will likely partially replace the glass fibers and squeeze into the ranks of the toothed belts.
